Conversation I had with Rebecca the other day:

Duh4evr: you can do it!
Duh4evr: I believe in you!
phoenixgirl84: take over the world? eat this whole pile of chocolate? or, more likely, get all my work done?
Duh4evr: yeah, survive finals
Duh4evr: you said you need help in your lj so I'm cheering you on
phoenixgirl84: thank you
Duh4evr: ha ha ha, Kari taking over the world
Duh4evr: that's afunny thought
phoenixgirl84: *crosses Rebecca off list of Generals of her army*
phoenixgirl84: :-)
Duh4evr: it reminds me of the simpsons halloween episode where the space aliens are elected president and they take over the world, I would imagine if you were to come into power, the world would be like if space aliens took over
Duh4evr: that totally came out wrong
phoenixgirl84: im trying to figure out how a statement about space aliens could possible come out right
Duh4evr: I mean, if you ruled the world, it wouldn't be a temocratic society, you would rule and your word would be law and that would be it
Duh4evr: I could see you sending a lot of people to death for punishment
phoenixgirl84: oh yeah...they'd be fun and creative deaths too, like death by having your face sat on by a sheep or death by having to dance to britney spears until your body gives out
Duh4evr: I wouldn't want to die like that
phoenixgirl84: well that means you'll just have to be loyal to my regime, won't you?
Duh4evr: of course, why would I go against the law of Kari?
phoenixgirl84: i don't know, you seem smart enough not to
phoenixgirl84: besides, i give cookies
Duh4evr: ummm, ohh man, I'd give my right hand for a cookie right now

My dear friend autumnchestnut and I have decided that since we are both graduating at the end of this school year (me in May and she in June), that we will undertake the reading of all 37 of Shakespeare's plays (and possibly some sonnets too). Our conundrum, however, is that there are many orders in which we could read this lovely plays, and need to decide one of them.

Our suggestions so far have been: reading them in the order they were published, alternating between comedy, history and tragedy in alphabetical order (i.e. listing each genre alphabetically and then reading the first comedy, the first history and the first tragedy, and then moving on to the second on each list), reading them from longest play to shortest play (with some modifications so that sequels aren't read before the original play), or both getting the same edition of the complete works and reading from front cover to back cover.

I am resisting the last option slightly, mostly because my tiny hands have problems holding huge books open for me to read for long periods at a time. Although we are not starting for another 8 months or so, I'm thinking about it now, and so I give you a poll.

...or I would give you a poll if I had paid time on this account anymore. So! you should go to my other journal and vote in the poll. Yay!

Fall Break Extravaganza Update!

I had a most amazing week, thanks a lot to Megan and Betsy, with thanks in part to Lianna and Shef.

Friday night we (Megan, Betsy, Lianna and I) went to Janesville, thus broadening our bubble of existence a full fifteen minute drive. We ate at Famous Dave's, and had our orgasm faces on all throughout dinner. The corn muffins! I had ribs and chicken tenders and corn and mashed potatoes and cinnamon apples and that beautiful, beautiful corn muffin. Yes, that was all one meal. Yes, I ate damn near all of it. Yes, I was in happy tummy heaven.
After dinner we went over to Target and spent a gleeful hour there. Betsy and I both purchased ladybug wings from the dollar shelves. I also bought some DVDs: Spiderman 1 and 2, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Saved! They were cleaning up at the Starbucks in the store but they let me order my venti iced chai anyway, for which I will be forever thankful. I can't not stop at a Starbucks if I see one and have cash on me. It'd just be wrong.
When we got back into Beloit Megan, Betsy and I watched Equilibrium in Betsy's room. Fantastic movie! I can't believe I'd never heard of it before! Christian Bale, Sean Bean and Taye Diggs in a movie similar to the Matrix. Inspired us to plan movie marathons, the first of which will be Christian Bale (American Psycho, Little Women, The Machinist and Batman Begins. The perfect combination, I know).

Saturday Lianna flew home and thus missed most of our adventures. Apparently she had a lovely break anyway though, so I guess that's okay. After brunch the evil trio, as we shall henceforth be known, went to the Apple Barn in Delavan to get apples and cider and have general fall fun. We reenacted scenes from Lost and modified the fake theme song for our own use. There is photographic evidence. We found our baby, a pumpkin we have named Carrot, as well as some other fall food products (cider, cider donuts, apples, apple dip, a squash we have yet to figure what to make with as well as the three gourds: The Magical Gourd of Destiny, The Ultimate Gourd of Evil, and Frank).
We went to see Elizabethtown, which was really quite good. We are planning a ceremony to promote Orlando Bloom from Legolas to actor status, as he can actually act. I know, we were surprised to. Good movie, good music in the movie, and it has inspired plans to take a road trip next summer. The evil trio takes America! I think we may have eaten at Culver's, but it's a bit of a blur by now.
After all that we stopped by Family Video so I could get a membership and we could get a pile of movies, which we did. All our movies had a horror/Halloween theme, it was great. The Nightmare Before Christmas, Casper, My Best Friend Is a Vampire, The Shining and The Jacket (well, that one turned out to be more of a thriller, but more on that later). I also got cheap movies from the used movies bin: Peter Pan, The Prince & Me, and SLC Punk on VHS and Kinsey on DVD. I love that bin. We came home to Betsy's room, which often serves as our home base, and started planning our movie marathons. While eating apples. Then we started watching Nightmare Before Christmas but wussed out half an hour in and all went home at 10. All that excitement in the first 24 hours of break wore our little bodies out.

Sunday we were lazy and sat around all day claiming to do work but really watching DVDs and talking online and all manner of random things. We ordered Chinese food for Dinner with Shef and watched Casper, which was just as fabulous as we all remembered. Megan keeps sneaking up behind us and whispering "Can I keep you?" creepily in our ears. I think she may do the line even better than baby Devon Sawa did.

I think Tuesday is the day that we went back to Janesville. We were bored sitting around Beloit and I needed to go back to Target anyway. I meant to get the pants from my awesome set of Tinkerbell pajamas in another size, but they only had uberlarge ones. I returned the pajamas, quite devastated, and had to buy Gilmore Girls Season 3 and a couple shirts as well as more Starbucks to cheer myself up. I had been looking for sassy/bitchy Tinkerbell pajamas forever and had finally found them, though pink, and despair of ever finding pajamas as cool as that again.
Then we went to the Janesville mall, which did not have a Hot Topic like we wanted it to. We keep thinking there are things in Janesville that are actually only in Rockford. Like a Chipotle. Silly us. I bought the complete School House Rock DVD and some blank CDs at Suncoast, and two Discworld books and Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris at Walton Books or whatever tiny bookstore was there. I thought I got something else as well, but can't for the life of me remember what it was.
We came back to watch The Jacket in Betsy's room, which we were a bit nervous about since it looked scary from the preview. It was good and not a bit scary. Stupid trailer. Adrien Brody was hot and Keira Knightley was cool and it spawned the creation of the Organization of the Organized, a very elite group headed by Megan, Betsy and myself. We have already inducted two members and banned two people (well, one person and one finger) for life. Mwahaha. Then we finished watching Nightmare Before Christmas. Man, I love that movie.

For some reason I have no recollection of what we did on Wednesday afternoon. It may be that we did not do anything of interest. Who knows. OH! Maybe thata was the day Betsy and I went and did some work in the lab in Chamberlin. Umm, nevermind, I think that was Tuesday actually. Oh well. Wednesday night we went to see Domino. OH MAN! So cool. Choco is hot. Mmm, Edgar Ramirez. He is my Venezuelan love god and oh he is so so so so hot. I mean it. Really.

Thursday! Thursday we went to Madison, with Shef tagging along with the trio because we decided not to go to the Decemberists concert that night as planned. Too lazy. They attempted to find me the perfect hat and prove that I can, indeed, be a hat person, but they failed. I wanted them to succeed, I really did, but I knew I was right. We stopped in a couple of clothing stores on the way up and down the street, and avoided the man with the dimes in his ears, and finally made our way to lawn gnome utopia. I don't remember the actual name of the store, but they had mugs with lawn gnomes on them. I bought one. He's on a swing and his name is Arthur. Megan has the same mug. We're gnome-twins. I also bought a button there with a question mark on it. I think it's cool.
We had coffee in this nice cafe and talked for a while, which is always fun, before heading off to A Room of One's Own, which is a feminist bookstore. They have a regular book section too, but then a whole section on Queer/Feminist Issues/Studies. I bought Barrel Fever, another David Sedaris book, a Tamora Pierce book, and this book called Egalia's daughters which I had been looking for since forever because I read it once but couldn't remember the name or the author or anything. I also got a postcard and some more buttons, including one that says Coffee Slut and the other that says I Am a Shameless Agitator. I thought they were appropriate. Oh, and Catwoman notebooks. Oh yeah. We got back around 9:30 and I had them drop me off on College Street and I went home and rejoiced over my gnome and other things while they went to watch The Shining. That fateful movie that brought Tony (and other Tony) into our lives. Megan gets creepier by the day.

Friday we had intended to go to Milwaukee to go shopping and things, but laziness, work, and lack of definite plans led us to decide to just leave later and go straight to the concert. What concert, you ask? Jason Mraz, that's who. Which was amazing. Bushwalla, Dropping Daylight, and Jason Mraz. Heavenly combination. Bushwalla posed the interesting point that it is hard to be a gangster with a basket on your bike. We almost assaulted some teenyboppers. One of the guys in Jason's band brings a lawn gnome on stage, we cheered for it. All in all an amazing concert, and we got cds, tshirts and signatures afterwards. And then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. Waited for two and a half hours in the cold with some weird possibly drunk girl and her drum so we could meet Jason. Then we met Jason. We hugged him and got his autograph and then walked away grinning madly and tried to keep Betsy from freaking out with joy. Then we followed the tour bus onto the highway because they knew where they were going and we didn't. We waved as we passed. We threw Tony out the window. Betsy owes me coffee and her first born child, so all in all the night was a good one.

Saturday Lianna was back. I missed brunch because I slept right through it. We went to Asia Buffet for dinner, and then to see Stay. It was trippy but really good. We decided that Damien Rice music is always used to give you that 'woah' feeling at the end of a movie. Ice cream at Culver's followed, which was yummy as always. Betsy finally got the Apple Blossom Sundae. Between dinner and the movie we went to Walmart, where I got a Tinkerbell bag and microwavable brownies and Earth Girls Are Easy on DVD. Quite the successful trip. Home again, home again, jiggity jig.

Sunday I did a little homework (emphasis on little) before we went to La Casa Grande for dinner. It was veeery good, as always. Then we grabbed our movies from Bushnell, went to Walmart, and dropped the movies off. Betsy and I got Halloween costumes. We're going as fairies. Evil fairies. Mwahahaha. We're trying to convince Megan to go as our ladybug fairy spawn. It would rock and be color-coordinated.

And that was my exciting break. I am now broke until Thursday. No, really, I spent my last $2 on coffee today. Man, I am such a coffee slut.

Long live the Organization for the Organized! Free the Gnomes! Redrum!

It's hard to be a gangster with a basket on your bike.

So lately me+Betsy=CRACK! I like the Betsycrack, it makes me happy. Behold the evidence of some of our crack in a conversation between Betsy and Wee Megan following Betsy and I watching Love's Labour's Lost (which everyone should watch, because it is very funny and there is singing). There is also a tiny contribution from Steve, see if you can spot it.

MoshiMoshi70x7: how was the movie?
dwixer: dandy
dwixer: we got a band name
dwixer: what do you think...
dwixer: the lickable dimples
MoshiMoshi70x7: lianna has a horrid expression on her face
dwixer: lol
MoshiMoshi70x7: who is the band? you and kari?
dwixer: yes
MoshiMoshi70x7: what is kari in the band?
dwixer: mime
MoshiMoshi70x7: that sounds...interesting
MoshiMoshi70x7: is anyone else in this band?
dwixer: no
MoshiMoshi70x7: i wish you the best success
dwixer: thank you
dwixer: free cd for you
MoshiMoshi70x7: how will kari be represented on the cd?
dwixer: chimes
dwixer: she's a chime mime
MoshiMoshi70x7: i see you've planned this out quite thoroughly
dwixer: not really
MoshiMoshi70x7: why is everyone dying?
dwixer: wtf?
MoshiMoshi70x7: why is everyone dying? everyone around is sick...so i ask a valid question
dwixer: evil genes

And there you go.

PS.
I haven't used this thing in forever, and god knows if I'll use it often/ever again, but oh well.

Having a somewhat surreal experience being back at Beloit. Everyone else I've talked to has been much better expressing how it feels than I've been, so I'll just say that it feels distinctly odd in a very familiar way. It's weird thinking of all the people I know that are gone, or that I don't know that are here. Both of those far outnumber the people I do know that are here, even if I include people I just recognize but don't know personally.

I also have a pretty craptastic schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Especially Tuesdays. I have an 8 am Geology class, Genetics, Genetics lab, and an evening English class, so I don't get out until 9 pm. I go that late on Thursdays, too, but at least then I don't start until noon (although I have four hours of class in a row to make up for it). Blech.

Maybe I should be a hermit when I grow up. Sounds kinda fun.

Holiday wish list meme

Step One

- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1. To be able to go home for Christmas.
2. icons for my lj and gj that are very 'me'
3. HP, BtVS/AtS or X-Men fic and art
4. pictures and letters from my friends
5. Jude Law...ok, just kidding
the real 5. books, any books I don't have, I'm a reading whore
6. Road to El Dorado on DVD
7. for my brother to stay with my mom for Christmas
8. a Beloit puppy pile
9. recordings of songs by Betsy or Rebecca or any of my other talented friends
10.world peace

So I know I won't get world peace, but I still want it damnit. Just like I want a pony. And unless someone has a ticket from Glasgow to Baltimore laying around, I won't be going home either. But that's okay. Smaller presents are good too. My email is karibean (at) gmail (dot) com for anyone that needs my mailing address. Which might turn out to be Chesty's address if you want me to get something on Christmas Day.

So, I now have money to spend for my birthday, and although I'll probably save some to spend in Frankfurt, the rest will probably be for books and cds.

So now all of you have to recommend books that I should read and/or buy that you think I probably haven't read already.

As I was searching on Amazon.com for books I might like, I realized there's quite a few non-fiction books I would like, all clearly liberal. And then I realized that I should probably read more conservative books as well, just to try to understand the 'other side' and see where each author might be right and/or wrong. But then I realized that although I may want to consider the validity of these people's opinions, I did not want to support them with my money, as that money would inevitably end up supporting causes I don't support. And the libraries here are kind of crap (not including the uni library). So I will probably have to wait until I get back to the states to read any of those. Ah well.

It has been a while since I've updated, but I've been busy with school work and all that fun stuff. I turned in my paper for my presessional class a little over a week ago, so I am done with that class. So far I am doing well in Gaelic, but I do not know how I am doing in Neuroscience or Microorganisms as we have not had any assessed work in those classes yet. My first Micro test is this Friday, and my first Neuro test is next Thursday, so we will see how those go.

I have recently been planning the two weeks in March when Mom shall be visiting, as we are going to be doing quite a bit of traveling. We are going to Amsterdam as well as Ireland, and I will be taking her to places in and around Glasgow as well as over to Edinburgh. I also need to start planning my Christmas hols as well. My plans mostly hinge on my friend Michelle getting permission from her mother for me to stay with them for Christmas, otherwise I might be having Christmas with my flatmate Melody and her family. Hopefully I'll be able to visit my friend Sophie as well, and there's a chance of me going home with my flatmate Eirinn to Norway for a few days if I can manage it. I do have to remember to leave time to study though, as I have exams in January when I return from break.

We are having a big Halloween party in our flat on the 30th, which should be a lot of fun. Eirinn and I are dressing up as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, mostly so I can use my new lab coat, heh. The party is also partly for Blathnaid and Eirinn's birthdays, who are within a couple days of the party.

Well, I have to go to class now, will update more when I have time.

Hey all, I'm in London. Don't have much time, and the internet isn't that great here. But hey, had a fun day with Chesty and Caroline and I'm looking forward to lots of sleep tonight. Hope you all are having fun wherever you may be. *smooches* to everyone

Right.

Was gone all weekend on fabulous trip to The Burn House in northeastern Scotland (Aberdeenshire I believe). It rocked hardcore.

I start presessionals tomorrow, although I only have about 2 hours of class a day for the next three weeks, which is great. Caroline and I are planning many fun things for this week.

For heavily detailed entries on my exploits here in Scotland, read my other journal, ochayeland. EDIT: Please note this is a journal that my family are reading, so don't put anything I wouldn't want my Grandma to read, okay? If you have doubts as to what my Grandma would find acceptable, assume she won't and email me with the comment instead. Or leave it here. Thanks muchly.

In fun time news: I drank an entire bottle of wine on Friday night and still managed to play table tennis. I so rock.

Right now I am typing this entry up in Word, because I do not have an internet connection yet. I should be able to get it set up tomorrow as I have time to go down to the office. So on to the update?

I am currently sitting in my room on Monday night at 9:15. I have a single with a private bathroom (although it is the smallest bathroom of all time, it is mine) in a flat for 5. We have a common hallway and a kitchen/dining room area. So far only 2 of my flatmates are moved in, Blathnaid and Melody. They are both postgraduates studying primary school education. Blathnaid (sort of pronounced Blo-nuth) is from Ireland and Melody is originally from Scotland but now lives in Canada (this would explain why I can understand everything she says). As far as the other residents of Glasgow, I understand 75-95% of what they're saying for the most part, depending on how fast they're talking and how tired I am.

My flat is in the West End, at the bottom of a large hill. Glasgow is very very very hilly, and I've definitely been getting a workout. Most of the other people from my school live on top of the hill, which is about a mile walk through Kelvingrove Park (although I have to figure out a way to get there without going through the park, as it is not safe at night). Tom McBride, a Beloit professor on the seminar program with us, lives on Gibson Street, also on top of the hill. I have to walk at least 15 minutes to get to an underground station or a grocery store in anything of use, except for a pub. Which, *gasp* I have not been to yet. I have now been here three days and haven't had any alcohol. Haven't had the time or the energy yet, and here's why:

Saturday
Four of us on the same flight from Chicago land in Glasgow a bit before 9 am. I only slept 45 minutes on the plane. We take a bus into the city centre, and then get two separate cabs to our residences. We go to the office to get my key, then to my apartment where I have to lug my suitcases up two flights of stairs. Then we go to the University gatehouse and get Lauren's key, before heading up to Maclay to drop her stuff off. After saying hello to the other Beloit students living in Maclay, the four of us walked down to my flat, then up to Byres road so the others could purchase mobile phones. From the phone store we went to Tom's flat and met his wife and daughter, Emma. All 7 of us talked for a while before heading to the Glasgow Science Centre (which I can see into from my kitchen window). Much fun was had, we got a little lost, but we made it back okay. We left Tom and his family and ate dinner on the way home (my very first fish and chips in Glasgow). I got home and tried to read so I could attempt to stay up to a reasonable time, but ended up climbing in bed at 7:45. Woke up at 9:45, met Blathnaid and her father, and got sick. Oh what fun. Went back to bed very upset and homesick, especially as I had not been able to get hold of my mother at all that day. Slept until 8:30, when I had to get up to meet Tom and the others all the way up the hill at Maclay. All in all, I walked at least 5 miles that day, on 45 minutes sleep (about 2 and a half hours if you count the nap on the plane from BWI to Chicago O'Hare.

Sunday
Walked up to Maclay, sore and tired, to meet the others. We walked to the Kelvinbridge underground station, but the underground does not open until 11 on Sundays, so we walked to the Hillhead station instead to show people where it was and waste some time. Got coffee and pastry at Starbucks for breakfast before taking underground to the city centre. Tom showed us around a little before we all split into small groups. Most of us went to an internet caf? to check our email and let everyone back home know we were okay. We split into smaller groups, and Tom, Emma, Claire, Lauren and I headed to Woolworths for some necessary supplies. All I bought were hangers for my wardrobes. We lugged our purchases back to Tom's flat, took a rest, and headed out grocery shopping. Tom and Emma came along to help us carry things. After stopping at an organic produce store (which has a 10% student discount!) and a Safeway (totally different than our Safeway), we picked up our other things from Tom's and made our way to our respective residences. We split up in the park, Emma helping me carry my things and Tom helping Claire and Lauren. Emma and I rested in my flat for a while (we were very tired) before heading back to meet the others at the slide in the park. We talked for a bit and all went home. I met my other flatmate Melody when I returned (the other two arrive next week). The three of us talked for a while, ate our respective dinners, and I read a magazine before bed. Still couldn't stay up until 10, as I had walked at least another 5 miles that day. 10 miles in 2 days, and almost no jetlag, it's amazing. If only I had a bathtub to soak in for these sore muscles.

Monday
Once again met at 10 am at Maclay, this time to go on a trip to the Isle of Arran. We took the underground the Glasgow Central, the train to Ardrossan Harbour and the ferry out to Arran. Lauren was seasick, so we let her rest for a bit before heading to a restaurant for lunch. Lauren still did not feel well after we ate, so she went to sit down in the visitor's center while we explored. We did not have much time since we wanted to make it back on the earlier ferry, so we walked up and down the village of Brodick, checking out the shops until it was time to queue up for the ferry. We had planned to stop at a pub once we were back in Glasgow, but we're all still tired, so we decided it would be best to go home and make our own dinners. Tomorrow Claire and Sarah are coming down to my flat at 1 so we can explore Argyle street between my flat and the city centre (or as far as we can walk before falling down, which is a lot farther than I previously thought). Between walking everywhere, carrying groceries over long distances, and all the hills, I will be a much healthier Kari when I return to the States next June.

Hopefully I will be able to post this tomorrow, Tuesday. I don't know how much longer I can go being this cut off from the world. I also need to call Lahra, a friend of a girl from Beloit who is in possession of my mobile phone. Emilie, the girl I bought it from, left it with her instead of bringing it back to the States and having to mail it to me.

I will update again later in the week, although probably not in quite so much boring detail, if I can. Cheers!
Right. So I'm leaving tomorrow, and I'm getting this I just want to curl up in my bed and sleep until I'm there kind of feeling. I have lots left to do, but absolutely no motivation or energy to do it. Which means my mother will probably yell at me when she gets home. Oh Joy.

Anyway, the real purpose of this entry is to say hey, I'm leaving, so I'll be unavailable internet wise for a few days. Hope you don't miss me too much.

Entry numero uno

So, my first entry in my new journal...

Countdown: 4 days until I leave for Glasgow
5 days until I get there
87 days until my birthday
124 days until Christmas with Chesty
10 months until I even think of coming back

I've started getting all my stuff together so I can pack it in my suitcases on Thursday. Mom is probably going to send a box or two to me with some kitchen stuff and a couple sweaters or something so I don't have to try to fit it all in my two suitcases. As of yet I do not know where I will be staying for the first day or two, but they should be emailing me back to let me know today or tomorrow.

My last day of work is on Wednesday, and I go in late each day. Have a dentist's appointment this morning while Caitlin is at therapy, and she has a doctor's appointment tomorrow and therapy again on Wednesday. I will be attempting to see Megan, Jen, and Joe this week before I leave, especially Jen as she has a pair of my pants that I would like to take with me.

Most if not all of you who may read this are going back to school soon or have already (except you damn Brits who don't start for a long time), so good luck, eat lots of pizza, and Beloiters: take lots and LOTS of pictures for me. I don't want to miss out on the action.
